This dust jacket is a Lady
Bluestocking custom creation and not a facsimile of any dust
jacket previously issued. The lovely front panel illustration is
taken from an original 19th century print bearing the
engraved inscription “The Deserted Wife” and a penciled
notation of 1850. The Saturday Eveninig Post ran Mrs.
Southworth's story from August 11 to December 1 of 1849. The
person I bought the print from suggested this was one of the
illustrations used in that publication, but I have not been able
to confirm that conclusively. The grief and depth of character
conveyed seem what Mrs. Southworth would approve.
