Anna Katharine Green

America's First Lady of Detective Fiction

Anna Katharine Green is credited by many as being the first female writer of detective fiction. Her first novel, THE LEAVENWORTH CASE debuted in 1878. She was still writing in 1923. Her many fans included such literary luminaries as Arthur Conan Doyle, Wilkie Collins, Mary Roberts Rinehart, and Agatha Christie. In fact, both Rinehart and Christie claimed that it was the novels of Anna Katharine Green which first inspired them to become writers of mystery fiction themselves.

Anna Katharine Green Herself

More thoughts on Anna Katharine Green:
Anna excelled at procedural detection; the gradual unfolding of the mystery through the successful unearthing of clue after clue. Her most famous detective was Ebenezer Gryce, who was introduced in her very first book. He, in turn, introduces the reader to a second series-detective—a younger subordinate named Sweetwater. Anna also wrote a series of dectective stories surrounding two feminine sleuths, Miss Violet Strange and the archetypal spinster sleuth, Miss Amelia Butterworth, who also collaborated with Inspector Gryce on occasion. Anna made very clear distinctions between these professional sleuths and her amateurs, and between the strengths and weaknesses of both.

Reading THE FORSAKEN INN was my first introduction to the writings of Anna Katharine Green. I was immediately captivated by the moody, brooding atmospheric quality of the work, which reminded me of another favorite story of mine, ARMADALE by Wilkie Collins. I read THE FORSAKEN INN straight-through, almost without pause and was a solid “Anna fan” long before I’d finished.

I next read THE AMETHYST BOX and THE HOUSE IN THE MIST, respectively—shorter novels which were presented together in the same volume by publisher Bobbs Merrill with cover and dust jacket art by Harrison Fisher. As life gets busier, I appreciate more and more the value of an author who can make a shorter novel feel rich and complete—without giving the sense that the story is missing some pivotal piece. So far I have found Anna Katharine Green very satisfying in this way.

I hope, if you haven't read her before, you'll give her a try.
